How to Deal with Ingrown Beard Hair and Bumps

added 06/01/2026

Prepare Your Tools

You will need:

  • Facial scrub (exfoliator) or a rougher washcloth
  • A product with salicylic acid or tea tree oil
  • Moisturizer (light, non-greasy)
  • A clean towel (for face only)

Tip: Never squeeze post-shave pimples. You can cause inflammation that leaves permanent scars. Focus on targeted products and prevention instead.

At-home care steps

  1. Exfoliation, twice a week

    • Use a facial scrub twice a week. Remove dead skin with circular motions.
    • This clears the way for hairs that would otherwise stay under the skin and start ingrowing.
  2. Target active spots

    • If a spot has already appeared, apply a little salicylic acid or tea tree product with a cotton swab.
    • These ingredients reduce swelling, clean the pore, and speed healing without irritating the surrounding skin.
  3. Light hydration

    • After every cleanse or shave, apply moisturizer.
    • Dry skin tends to toughen, which leads to ingrown hairs again. Supple skin lets beard hairs grow in the right direction.
