Our goal when choosing a shampoo is to select one that helps our hair thrive rather than deteriorate. It should effectively cleanse the scalp and hair of all impurities while avoiding excessive dryness and preserving our healthy microbiome (which we discussed in a previous article).
Nowadays, it’s not entirely true that you should avoid drugstore shelves when searching for a high-quality shampoo, as even among the more affordable options, better alternatives can be found. However, if we’re looking for truly high-quality products, they are still primarily available in professional hair supply stores (whether physical or online) or at reputable salons.
Is it really necessary to make such a fuss about shampoo?
Yes. High-quality shampoos contain minimal sulfates and silicones (which can dry out and damage hair) and instead are enriched with proteins and biotin (which nourish the hair and add volume). Another major advantage is that they are specifically formulated to suit your hair type. Whether you need a shampoo for dry, colored, fine, or thick hair, there is a tailored solution—because even thick hair requires specialized care.
And yes, these hair care products are more expensive, but your hair will reward you for the investment by showing noticeable improvements, making it clear why it’s worth it.
If, however, a complete multi-step hair care routine (which ideally includes at least shampoo, conditioner, and a hair mask) isn’t financially feasible for you, or if you can’t afford to purchase these products every few months, we completely understand.
So, if we had to choose just one product to invest in, we would recommend the conditioner.
Conditioner as a Lifesaver
A cheap shampoo may cleanse your hair but can also cause some damage. A high-quality conditioner, on the other hand, ensures that essential nutrients reach the roots and overly open hair cuticles, providing much-needed hydration to dry scalp and hair, balancing the scalp’s pH, and—most importantly—sealing the cuticles. This locks in moisture, protects against mechanical damage, prevents breakage, shields from heat, and defends against other harmful external factors. In short, it helps restore and stabilize the hair after shampooing.
